Named after the Lenape Indian word for land of good bread or good land to settle upon, Manalapan Township, New Jersey is located 45 miles southwest of New York City and 15 miles from the Jersey Shore. This suburban township of close to 40,000 residents was settled in 1848 with deep roots in farming, agriculture and saw and grain mills. Manalapan was home of the Battle of Monmouth fought during the Revolutionary War and was home to a Civil War training ground. The census designated area of Yorktown (population 6500) is also a part of Manalapan. Spend some time learning about the Battle of Monmouth at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. The park includes an interpretive center and historic houses for public tours. For those looking to soak up the sun and spend a day on the beach, Manalapan is just a short drive from the Jersey Shore.
